Aluminum Profiles for LED Lighting: Heat Sinks and LED Channels

Thermal management and architectural lighting profiles for LED applications

Application Overview

LED lighting has transformed the lighting industry over the past decade, and aluminum extrusion has been central to that transformation. Every LED luminaire — from a simple strip light to a 200W industrial high-bay — needs to manage the heat generated by the LEDs. Aluminum's combination of high thermal conductivity, light weight, and extrudability makes it the ideal material for LED heat sinks and housings. And the growing demand for architectural LED lighting has created a parallel market for aluminum LED channel profiles that hold and diffuse LED strip lights.

The LED lighting industry in Southeast Asia is growing rapidly, driven by government energy efficiency programs, falling LED prices, and the replacement of fluorescent and HID lighting in commercial and industrial buildings. Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia have all launched programs to replace street lighting with LED, creating large-scale demand for LED luminaire components including aluminum heat sink profiles.

At Jinshi, we supply heat sink profiles to LED luminaire manufacturers across Southeast Asia, as well as LED channel profiles to interior fit-out contractors and architectural lighting designers. Our heat sink profiles are designed to specific thermal requirements — we work with customers to optimize the fin geometry for their specific LED module and airflow conditions, rather than selling generic catalog items that may not meet the thermal performance requirements.

Heat Sink Design: Getting the Thermal Performance Right

The thermal resistance of a heat sink determines the operating temperature of the LED junction, which in turn determines the LED's lifespan and lumen maintenance. A LED running at 85°C junction temperature will have a lifespan of approximately 25,000 hours; the same LED running at 65°C will last 50,000 hours or more. The heat sink is the component that makes this difference.

Heat sink design involves a trade-off between fin height, fin pitch, and base thickness. Taller fins provide more surface area for heat dissipation, but they also increase the thermal resistance between the fin base and the fin tip (because heat has to conduct along the fin length). Tighter fin pitch provides more fins per unit width, but reduces the airflow between fins in natural convection applications. The optimal design depends on the specific application: the power dissipation, the available space, the airflow conditions, and the maximum allowable junction temperature.

We work with customers to develop heat sink profiles that are optimized for their specific application. For natural convection applications (no fan), we typically design with fin heights of 40–60mm and fin pitch of 8–12mm. For forced air cooling, we use tighter pitch (4–6mm) and lower fin height (20–30mm). For high-power applications (above 100W), we may recommend a vapor chamber base combined with aluminum fins — a hybrid approach that provides better thermal spreading than a solid aluminum base.

LED Channels: The Detail That Makes the Difference

LED strip lights have become ubiquitous in commercial and residential interiors, but the quality of the installation varies enormously. Strip lights installed without a proper aluminum channel look cheap: the individual LED dots are visible, the adhesive backing fails within months, and the strips sag and discolor. Strip lights installed in a quality aluminum channel look completely different: a smooth, even line of light with no visible hot spots, held securely in place, with the heat dissipated through the aluminum base.

The difference is the channel. A good LED channel does four things: it holds the strip securely (mechanical function), it conducts heat away from the LEDs (thermal function), it diffuses the light to eliminate hot spots (optical function), and it provides a clean, finished appearance (aesthetic function). Our LED channel profiles are designed to perform all four functions well.

The base of the channel is flat to within 0.2mm over its length, ensuring full contact between the LED strip and the channel for maximum heat transfer. The diffuser groove is precisely dimensioned to hold the PC diffuser cover securely without gaps that would allow light leakage at the edges. The overall channel width is designed to match standard LED strip widths (8mm, 10mm, 12mm) with a small clearance that allows easy installation without forcing.

For architectural projects where the channel will be visible — cove lighting, under-cabinet lighting, stair edge lighting — we offer channels in anodized black finish, which provides a premium appearance that complements modern interior design. The black anodized finish also increases the emissivity of the channel surface, improving radiative heat dissipation in natural convection applications.
