Aluminum Profiles for Solar Panel Frames and PV Mounting Systems

Lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum extrusions for photovoltaic installations across Southeast Asia

Application Overview

Southeast Asia is in the middle of a solar revolution. Vietnam installed over 16 GW of solar capacity in a single year. Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are racing to meet their renewable energy targets. Behind every one of those solar panels — residential rooftop, commercial building, or utility-scale ground mount — is an aluminum frame. And the quality of that frame determines whether the panel survives 25 years of tropical sun, monsoon rain, and coastal salt air, or fails prematurely and voids the manufacturer's warranty.

Solar panel frames have requirements that seem simple but are actually quite demanding. They need to be light enough not to add significant structural loading to the roof, but strong enough to withstand wind uplift loads of 2.5 kPa or more in typhoon-prone areas. They need to hold the glass precisely — the glass bite must be consistent to prevent stress concentrations that can crack the glass. And they need to last 25 years without maintenance in an environment that would destroy steel within 5 years.

Aluminum extrusion is the only material that meets all these requirements at a reasonable cost. Our solar frame profiles are manufactured from 6063-T5 or 6063-T6 alloy, anodized to AA20 (20μm oxide layer) as standard, with AA25 available for coastal installations. We supply to panel manufacturers who fabricate frames at their production line, and to EPC contractors who cut and assemble frames in the field.

Why the Frame Matters More Than You Think

Many solar project developers treat the panel frame as a commodity — something to be sourced from the cheapest available supplier. This is a mistake that shows up years later, when frames corrode, glass seals fail, and panels need to be replaced years ahead of schedule.

The frame performs several critical functions. It holds the glass panel rigidly, preventing the flexing that can crack the glass under wind and snow loads. It seals the edge of the laminate, preventing moisture ingress that degrades the EVA encapsulant and causes delamination. It provides the mounting interface for the racking system, transferring wind and gravity loads to the structure. And it protects the vulnerable edge of the glass from impact damage during handling and installation.

A frame that fails in any of these functions will compromise the panel's performance and lifespan. Corrosion of the frame can cause the glass seal to fail, allowing moisture into the laminate. Insufficient stiffness can cause glass cracking under wind loads. Poor dimensional tolerance can cause the glass to sit unevenly in the frame, creating stress concentrations at the corners.

Our solar frame profiles are manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances: glass channel width ±0.15mm, glass bite depth ±0.2mm. We perform 100% dimensional inspection of the glass channel geometry on every production run, and we provide the inspection data in the quality report. For panel manufacturers who are running automated frame assembly lines, this consistency is essential — even small dimensional variations can cause assembly problems that slow the production line.

Rooftop vs Ground-Mount: Different Requirements

Rooftop and ground-mount solar installations have different structural requirements that affect the frame specification. Rooftop installations are typically on residential or commercial buildings, where the roof structure has limited load capacity and the wind exposure is moderate. Ground-mount installations are in open fields, where the wind exposure is higher and the structural requirements are more demanding.

For residential rooftop installations in Vietnam and Thailand, the standard frame specification is 6063-T5 with 35–40mm frame depth and AA15 anodizing. The wind loads are typically 1.0–1.5 kPa, which the standard frame handles comfortably. The frame weight is minimized to reduce roof loading — every kilogram of frame weight adds to the structural load on the roof.

For utility-scale ground-mount installations in coastal areas — common in Vietnam's Mekong Delta and Thailand's Gulf coast — the wind loads can reach 2.5–3.0 kPa, and the salt air environment is highly corrosive. For these applications, we specify 6063-T6 with 50mm frame depth and AA25 anodizing. The T6 temper provides 55% higher proof stress than T5, allowing the frame to withstand higher wind loads without deformation. The AA25 anodizing provides 2,000+ hours of salt spray resistance, ensuring the frame survives the coastal environment for the full 25-year project life.

Working with Panel Manufacturers and EPC Contractors

We supply solar frame profiles to two distinct customer types, and we've tailored our service to meet the needs of each. Panel manufacturers need consistent quality, reliable delivery, and technical support for their production line. EPC contractors need flexibility, fast response, and the ability to handle urgent orders when project timelines slip.

For panel manufacturers, we offer a blanket order arrangement: you commit to a monthly volume, we hold inventory at our warehouse, and we ship weekly or bi-weekly to your production schedule. This eliminates the lead time uncertainty that can disrupt production planning. We also provide first-article inspection reports for each new frame profile, and we maintain process control records that allow us to trace any quality issue back to the specific production run.

For EPC contractors, we offer cut-to-length service with ±0.5mm length tolerance and pre-drilled drainage holes at specified positions. This reduces the field fabrication work and allows faster installation. We can also supply the complete frame hardware kit — corner keys, mounting clips, and end caps — alongside the profiles, simplifying procurement.
