Product Overview
The frameless glass balustrade has become one of the defining aesthetic elements of modern high-end residential and hospitality design. A continuous sheet of glass, seemingly unsupported, offering unobstructed views from a balcony or staircase — it's a design statement that says "we didn't compromise on the view." The aluminum base channel is the hidden component that makes this possible.
The base channel is a U-shaped aluminum profile that is fixed to the floor or structural slab, into which the glass panel is inserted and held by a continuous EPDM gasket. The channel must be strong enough to transfer the horizontal load from the glass (wind pressure and human impact) to the structure, while holding the glass securely without cracking it. The EPDM gasket cushions the glass against hard contact with the aluminum and provides a weathertight seal at the base of the glass panel.
Our glass balustrade base channels are designed for 12mm and 15mm tempered glass, which are the standard thicknesses for frameless balustrade applications. The channel width is sized to provide a 5mm clearance on each side of the glass, which is taken up by the EPDM gasket. The channel depth provides a minimum glass bite of 50mm — sufficient for the structural requirements of most residential and commercial balustrade applications.
The structural design of the base channel must account for the horizontal load applied at the top of the glass panel. For a 1,100mm high glass panel with a design load of 1.0 kN/m (residential), the base moment is 1.1 kN·m/m. Our standard base channel, fixed to the slab with M10 anchor bolts at 300mm spacing, provides a moment resistance of 1.8 kN·m/m — a safety factor of 1.6 above the design load.
