Aluminum Stair Nosing and Step Edge Profiles

Safety-compliant aluminum stair nosing profiles for slip resistance and step edge protection.

Product Overview

Stair accidents are one of the most common causes of injury in commercial buildings. A slippery step edge, an invisible step edge in low light, or a damaged step edge that catches a heel — each can cause a fall that results in serious injury and significant liability for the building owner. Aluminum stair nosing profiles address all three risks: they provide a slip-resistant surface at the step edge, they can be supplied in high-visibility colors to make the step edge visible, and they protect the step edge from wear and damage.

Our stair nosing profiles are designed to be installed at the front edge of each step, covering the vulnerable corner where the tread meets the riser. The profile has a flat section that lies on the tread surface, a curved nose that covers the step edge, and a vertical section that covers the upper part of the riser. This geometry protects the step edge from impact damage and provides a consistent, clean appearance across the staircase.

The slip resistance of stair nosing is provided by a rubber or carborundum insert in the top surface of the profile. The rubber insert is available in black (standard) or safety yellow (for high-visibility applications). The carborundum insert provides higher slip resistance than rubber and is preferred for outdoor stairs or stairs in wet environments. Both inserts are replaceable when worn, extending the service life of the stair nosing profile.

We supply stair nosing profiles in standard widths of 50mm and 75mm, in lengths up to 3,000mm. For curved staircases, we can supply profiles that are pre-bent to the required radius. The profiles are fixed to the step with countersunk screws, which are covered by the slip-resistant insert for a clean appearance.

System Interfaces, Fabrication and Delivery Controls

Architectural profiles must be bought as an interacting system. Frame, sash, glazing bead, gaskets, hardware, drainage and finish need to be checked together rather than ordered as isolated section shapes.
